Have you ever thought about what your child goes through as they learn how to ride a bike, kick a ball, ice skate or even learn how to crawl, walk, run and climb?
Think about how many times they fall before they master their new skill. On average your child will fall 2,500 times before the age of 7! Each fall places stress on the spine, however, it does not always cause immediate pain or symptoms.
Did you know that inside your child’s skull and spine is their delicate nervous system (brain and spinal cord) which is the master controller of the function of all systems of the body? Messages between the brain and body travel back and forth along this pathway. Think of what interference 2,500 bumps would do to the transmission of these signals. Pain is not always the first symptom to appear especially in children. However, dysfunction can show up as headaches, chronic ear infections, poor digestion, constipation, bedwetting, behaviour issues and many more. Even the birth process itself can strain the nervous system contributing to colic, reflux, latching and feeding problems and sleep issues. This is why so many parents choose to have their newborn checked right away for spinal misalignment or subluxations to help their baby thrive right from the beginning.
So how does Chiropractic work?
Your chiropractor will asses your child’s spine for subluxations, imbalances, examine their nervous system and posture in a fun relaxed environment. If a subluxation is detected the chiropractor will perform a very safe, gentle adjustment to the specific area required. Sometimes it’s a light finger touch, other times a small instrument is used (like the pressure you would use to touch a ripe tomato). It’s painless and quite relaxing. Many parents report after an adjustment that their baby or child had their “best night” sleep. The adjustment’s objective is to remove interference from the nervous system and restore the normal transmission of signals between the brain and the body. Thus, allowing the body to grow and heal naturally. As children don’t have the accumulated wear and tear of adults they usually respond very quickly to chiropractic care. During our childhood the most rapid phase of growth occurs up until the age of 7. Think of how many times the cells divide and replicate, especially between 0 and 2yrs of age (a time where our body will actually double in size). What an amazing phenomenon!
During this phase of life it is critical for optimal development to have a spine and nervous system that is free of interference. Many spinal problems that adults have, could have been avoided or minimized had their spines been checked and adjusted by a chiropractor during these developing years.
As a local Chiropractor and mother of four I know firsthand how wonderful Chiropractic is in allowing children to “express life” and live to their full health potential. I wish that for your children as well.
